Characteristics of the Dynatest Falling Weight Deflectometer testing equipment

The Dynatest Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) applies a dynamic load that simulates the loading of a moving wheel. The pavement response is analyzed with Dynatest’s ELMOD (Evaluation of Layer Moduli and Overlay Design) software to determine the elastic moduli, stresses and strains of each modeled layer. ELMOD reports the weakest layer of failure, residual life and determines the optimum rehabilitation alternatives. The FWD is available as a trailer or a truck mounted version (USA only) meeting all FWD standards worldwide.

HEAVY WEIGHT DEFLECTOMETER (HWD)


Dynatest developed the first commercially available Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD). The HWD is highly versatile and can be used to test on both rigid, paver block and flexible pavements on roads and airports. The HWD can apply a loading in the range of 30-320kN, enabling it to simulate vehicle loading from to the most extreme aircraft wheel load such as the Boeing 777, the Airbus 340 or 380.

The Dynatest 5051 Mk-III Road Surface Profilometer measures a number of indices and characteristics including the longitudinal profile, International Roughness Index (IRI), Ride Number (RN), transverse profile, rutting, macrotexture, and geometrics (crossfall, gradient and radius of curvature). It can also provide data for the Boeing Bump Index (BBI) calculation. The RSP has a unique “Stop & Go” functionality enabling the equipment to operate in an efficient manner in urban areas, at traffic lights, stop signs, junctions and roundabouts, making it an ideal tool for data collection on both urban and rural networks. The equipment meets the ASTM E950 Class 1, AASHTO R 57 and independently verified State road standards such as the Text-1001-s, ensuring high accuracy, repeatability under a variety of conditions that ensure the data can be used for project and network evaluation and in Pavement Management Systems.

The RSP-III is a fully upgradable system offering up to 21 lasers. Ideal for highways and airports.

The RSP-IV is the portable version easily attached to any vehicle with the capability to attach 1 or 2 lasers. The RSP-IV is extremely versatile, easily mountable on almost any vehicle, for testing Cycle paths determining the Cycle Profile Index (CPI), on highways IRI and RN, and airports to determine the BBI.

Options for both the RSP-III and RSP-IV include texture capable lasers, (D)GPS, and ROW cameras.

The Dynatest Multi Functional Vehicle combines the functionality of the RSP with the Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS) from Pavemetrics. The MFV measures the IRI/RN, longitudinal and transverse profile, macrotexture, raveling and geometrics (crossfall, gradient, and radius of curvature). 2D or 3D pavement imagery from the LCMS across a 4m width enables rapid and objective crack detection and crack classification, and up to 8 Right of Way cameras, providing a complete view of the road and assets. The MFV brings safety to the forefront, allowing surveys of roads and airports to be performed from a vehicle at normal traffic speeds, day or night, precluding the need for traffic management.

The Dynatest 6875H Highway Slip Friction Tester is an accurate and repeatable, self-contained continuous measuring device that provides self-wetted coefficients of friction on highway pavements.

It is designed for maintenance testing to evaluate pavement friction changes due to weathering, traffic, aging, and contaminants. It can be used in difficult test areas, such as bridge decks, off-ramps, city streets, and intersections, giving an accurate continuous friction trace for the area being tested.

ADVANTAGES

– The 6875H is a fully instrumented vehicle that uses a Dynatest Two Axis Force Transducer mounted on a retractable fifth wheel assembly. The test gear is mounted adjacent to the left or right wheel of the vehicle to allow safe wheel track testing.

– This assembly provides real time vertical load and horizontal tractive force measurement. The fifth wheel assembly is driven at 14% slip. The 6875H meets the requirements of ASTM Standard E2340 for fixed slip friction measurement.

– System electronics include laptop computer with user-friendly Windows® software allowing the operator to enter customized test patterns, test type (manual or automatic) and to annotate pavement test conditions for later reference.

– The friction values, along with vehicle speed, temperature and water flow rate data are stored and can be printed out during testing or post test.

– The system includes a minimum 250 U.S. gallon (1000 litre) water tank, positive displacement water pump and laminar flow water nozzle to allow for wet pavement testing on up to 72,000+ft. (22000+m) of pavement with a water film thickness of 0.02in (0.5mm).

The Dynatest 6875 Runway Friction Tester is an accurate and repeatable, self-contained continuous friction measuring equipment (CFME) that provides coefficients of friction (Mu) on airport runways.

The 6875 is designed for both functional (maintenance) and operational testing to evaluate surface friction including changes due to weather contaminants and rubber contamination. Operational friction testing can be performed during such adverse weather as heavy rain, ice, slush or snow.

The 6875 is a fully instrumented pickup truck available in either two wheel or four wheel drive. It uses a Dynatest Two-Axis Force Transducer mounted on a retractable fifth wheel assembly.

The test assembly provides real time vertical load and horizontal tractive force measurements. The 6875 meets all the FAA and ICAO specifications for friction measuring devices and is listed in both the FAA AC 150/5320-12 approved device list and the ICAO Airport Services Manual.

System electronics include a laptop computer and inkjet printer with user-friendly Windows® software, which allows the operator to control the test procedure including test speed, self-wetting or dry testing, test method (FAA or ICAO), test type (manual or automatic) and annotate airfield test conditions for later reference.

Data is presented in either ICAO or FAA format with all data being stored for further use in ASCII format. Data stored includes the raw load and traction data, speed, water flow, optionally GPS coordinates, air temperature and pavement temperature and texture (MPD) data. Friction numbers can be printed at every foot, meter or other desired interval. Mu data and speed are visible real time during the tests on both the laptop computer and the dash mounted information display.

The system includes the industry’s largest 300 U.S. gallon (1200 litre) built in, aluminum, baffled water tank, positive displacement water pump and laminar flow water nozzle for self-wetting testing of up to 44,000 ft.+ (13400 m+) of runway without refilling. Larger water tank sizes available on request.

Low Speed WIM or Static Axle by Axle Weighing Systems

INTEGRATED HIGH ACCURACY LOW SPEED WEIGH-IN-MOTION SYSTEM OR STATIC AXLE WEIGHING

Manufactured in Great Britain by VWS APOLLO FIXED® Axle Weighing SYSTEM is a low cost, high spec axle and gross vehicle weigher, either as a static axle weighbridge or for dynamic low speed weighing. The system can be used for check-weighing, for enforcement of vehicle weight limits or overload prevention for transport operators. The electronic weighing controller is encased within a stainless steel enclosure and can either be mounted directly on an office wall, desk or enclosed in a separate cabinet for external mounting. RS232 and RS485 serial connections are available for connecting a weight ticket printer, a computer and/or external large character weight display.

The APOLLO PORTABLE WIM® acle weighbridge is suitable for weighing vehicles either in-motion (WIM) at low speeds (5 kph), or statically (axle-by-axle). Each pad is rated to 20,000 kg giving a massive capacity of 40,000 kg per axle. On a good quality flat surface, accuracies in the order of ±0.5% for static weighing and ±2% for low speed weigh-in-motion are achieved.
